Barcelona, You Had Me At Hola
The City
Catalonia's capital is a must-see for those who love architecture, international cuisines, and of course, the wine goes without saying. Barcelona welcomes you to a bustling city divided into many districts, offering a different vibe and chance for exploration.
Ciutat Vella Neighborhood: A walk along the beach is a must for any tourist, whether you fancy an evening stroll, little more activity like cycling, or relax on the sand. The boardwalk is full of action and provides the best views of the cityscape. The beach offers effortless access to small shops, specialty cafes, and restaurants at the heart of the city along Las Ramblas. This area promises something for everyone.
The Sights
Example: One of the most notable sights is Gaudi's Basílica de la Sagrada Família. This impressive Roman Catholic structure has continued to be unfinished over 138 years later, slated to open in 2026. However, like other venues were forced to close their doors to the pandemic, which halted construction. This attraction draws hundreds of visitors a day, so a travel tip is to book entry tickets before arrival. These tickets are the best option to secure the possibility of witnessing the intricate interior.
The city is mostly closed on Sundays, therefore a great time to walk the vacant streets for architectural photography. I was surprised to see how the districts were quiet in the mornings, and around 3 p.m., people came out and gathered in common areas like the seaside boardwalks, shopping malls, and courtyards. The city parks and side streets offer views of performers, street vendors, gatherings, and residents going about their lives. Word of caution: dogs are allowed everywhere, including the malls and grocery stores, so mind your step.
Architecture
Visitors travel to Barcelona because of its reputation for modernist architecture. Of course, the biggest draw is Gaudi. However, there are many other incredible structures in Romanesque and Gothic artistic designs. Glass, steel, and concrete creating functional and geometric design philosophies can be found expressed in a minimalist manner. The city is a combination of classical and contemporary presenting insight into the evolution of European architecture.
The Food
Spain and Barcelona understand how to prepare meals and do not overlook the significance of food styling. From a small gelato cafe, hotel restaurant, side street bakery, or pizzeria, the aromas fill the streets. The quality and taste are unimaginable. The gelato pictured drizzled with whiskey cream, chocolate stacked desserts with fresh raspberry coulee, baked cheese croissants, deep-dish three-cheese pizza drizzled with olive oil. Barcelona is a food lovers paradise.
Safety Is Important
Similar to other large metropolitan cities, theft of bags and pickpocketers are prevalent. Understandable as the streets are narrow and filled with people. Our hotel concierge's best advice is to leave your passports locked in a hotel safe. Men should place their wallets in a front pant pocket, and women should utilize cross-body handbags. Additionally, if you are a photographer carrying equipment, purchase a camera bag that looks like a ladies' handbag, plain backpack, and use the safety clips on zippers to ensure the security of your equipment.
